Sharia law at work in Australia

SHARIA law has become a shadow legal system within Australia, endorsing polygamous and underage marriages that are outlawed under the Marriage Act.

Not only they are OK with polygynist marriages, but the director of the Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations seems to blame the way of living of Australia, at least for the frequency of it:

It’s definitely a minority, but unfortunately is does exist and I think it comes down to the standard of living that Australia affords many men who normally would not be able to afford such a situation, » Mr Seyit said.

Oh, hum. Trying to use « religious tolerance » to push a system of « different laws for different people »… Sadly, it’s easier in countries with a legal system inspired by the English common law, where what is legal tends to be defined as what is the norm in a given community. (At least, that how I understand it. France and its system of « the law is what the state says it is » inherited from the Revolution and Napoleon is a very different proposition.)

Well, for some time I considered (and I consider for the near future) to work in Canada. The problem have being discussed there too. Check the exchange with Frederic [FB connexion necessary]. I feel concerned by this stuff.

Now I wonder about other Commonwealth countries. I have a friend who’s so fed up with France that she’s planning to move to New Zealand in a few years if she can. (Don’t ask me why. Apparently, Kiwis are cool or something.😉 ) But if the same trends are at work as in Canada, England or Australia, she may be in for a surprise. Especially as she’s a staunch atheist!
