Portable Genomics opens in San Diego

Portable Genomics, a software developer of comprehensive visualization of personal genomic data, officially opened its doors in La Jolla on Oct. 1. After exploring several possible locations across the U.S., the company’s founders, a French group of molecular biologists from Bordeaux, France, believe La Jolla to be right location for the company due to concentration of local research institutes and genomic medicine industries on the Torrey Mesa. “With San Diego’s extensive involvement in the wireless and medical field, I could not help but move Portable Genomics here,” said CEO Patrick Merel. “CONNECT, CONNECT’s Springboard program and CommNexus’ EvoNexus were of great help in getting Portable Genomics established so we can help advance the industry into electronic health paths.” Portable Genomics is designing a standard interface for comprehensive genome data visualization on mobile platforms and aims to connect genome data with healthcare, pharma, nutrition and wellness providers.

Sometimes, emigration is the solution to a problem. The way France, and Europe in a more wide perspective, deals with personal genomics is the kind of problems that can make it mandatory to seek for more friendly skies. I’m delighted from Patrick’s decision to move his project to the USA. Whatever the future will be for Portable Genomics seeding it at San Diego is a courageous decision.
