This is my favorite pick from this week’s PLos ONE. I’m not in the development business but the subject made me drink a lot of coffee the last few months, as I tried to reply to Vincent Fleury’s “pure physics” approach.
The paper is great but somehow frustrating, I would love to see more in situ hybridization data between the stages described, that’s blastula, gastrula and spot. And maybe higher resolution images in the supporting data
I’ll keep under the fold a composite of figures 2 and 3, showing the establishment of the AP axis by Wnt and TGF-ß (for legends go and read the paper
and don’t forget to rate it.

Above the original images, picked in the paper’s pdf.
Below, some image enhancement to better show hybridization signal. Not great, as I treated the batch. I will do much better with higher resolution images and without the lettering that bothers me (*wink*, *wink*). ROIs were “passe-haut” filtered at the “blue” level and levels were redistributed over the 255 levels scale of luminosity, and the gamma set at 0.9.

Wouldn’t you say that there is an eight shaped figure at the “TGF-ß gastrula” stage?
